How Often Should You Get a Facial?

It's one of the questions I hear most often in the treatment room: "So... how often should I actually be doing this?" The honest answer is that it depends on your skin, your goals, and your budget — but there is a science-backed baseline worth knowing, plus a few situations that change the math.

The general rule: every 4–6 weeks

Your skin has a natural renewal cycle — new cells form in the deeper layers and travel up to the surface, shedding as they go. For most adults, that full cycle takes about 28 to 40 days, and it slows down further with age.

That's why estheticians so often land on once a month as the sweet spot. It's frequent enough to:

  • Keep pores clear before congestion turns into breakouts

  • Support steady, gradual improvement (brightness, texture, tone) rather than a one-off "glow" that fades in a week

  • Catch small changes in your skin early, before they become bigger concerns

  • Keep your at-home routine working with new suggestions

Think of facials like going to the gym or visiting the dentist. One appointment can leave your skin looking refreshed, but consistent treatments are what create long-term improvements.

When you might want facials more often

Some situations call for a tighter interval, especially in the short term:

  • Active breakouts or congestion — every 2–3 weeks for a stretch can help get things under control faster

  • Big event coming up (wedding, photos, reunion) — a short series in the weeks leading up, tapering off, works better than one facial the day before

  • Post-procedure or in-between other treatments — your provider may recommend a specific cadence to support healing or results

  • Very oily or acne-prone skin — pores tend to congest faster, so some clients do best every 3 weeks

When less is more

On the flip side, if your skin is sensitive, very dry, or reactive, going too frequently can actually backfire over exfoliating or over manipulating the skin barrier. For these clients, every 6–8 weeks with a gentler, more nourishing approach is often the better call. This is exactly why a facial should be tailored to your skin at that visit, not a one-size-fits-all treatment.

What actually matters more than the calendar

Frequency is only half the equation. What I look at with each client is:

  1. Skin type and current concerns — oily, dry, combination, sensitive, mature, acne-prone all age and renew differently

  2. What you're doing at home — a solid home routine can stretch the time between visits; a thin one usually means your skin needs more in-office support

  3. Life factors — stress, hormones, sun exposure, and even seasons change what your skin needs month to month

  4. Your goals — maintenance looks different from actively treating something like hyperpigmentation or breakouts

That's why I always reassess at each visit rather than just running the same protocol on repeat. A facial should evolve with your skin, not stay static.

What If You Can Only Come a Few Times a Year?

Don't worry—any facial is better than none! Even seasonal facials can help reset your skin, address changes in weather, and give your complexion a healthy boost.

To maintain your results between visits, it's important to follow a consistent home skincare routine with products that are right for your skin type.

Your Home Routine Matters, Too

Professional treatments and daily skincare work hand in hand. Think of your home routine as the foundation and your facial appointments as the professional tune-ups that help you achieve even better results.

Cleansing, moisturizing, and using targeted treatment products can significantly extend the benefits of each facial.

The bottom line

If you only remember one thing: monthly is the benchmark, but the right frequency is the one that matches your skin's actual needs, which we can figure out together. If you're not sure where to start, that's exactly what a consultation is for.

Not sure how often is right for you? Book a facial and we'll build a rhythm that fits your skin and your schedule — including membership options if you'd like predictable monthly visits at a better value.
